
The
office of career services provides career development and professional job search assistance to students and alumni through individual career counseling and exploration of various career opportunities in art and design. The office also provides advice in writing résumés and cover letters, making portfolio presentations, self-promoting, honing interviewing skills and networking. Various career workshops offered each quarter assist students with career exploration and preparation for internships and job placement.
Students are encouraged to attend workshops and learn about career options in their major. Workshops are recorded and made available to SCAD-eLearning students. Topics include how to get an art and design internship, interviewing techniques, targeting art and design employers, job search skills, and researching graduate schools and artist residencies.
Career Resource Library The office of career services serves as a resource and referral center for students and alumni seeking information about employment, postgraduate study, competitions, internships and other career-related opportunities. The resource library includes art and design books for use in researching specific career choices. Other available resources are employer directories with information about specific employers, brochures describing the benefits of membership in various professional associations, and newsletters giving details on successful job search strategies for artists and designers.
The Job Magnet The office of career services maintains contacts with employers all over the United States who are interested in hiring SCAD interns and graduates to fill positions in art and design fields. The online
Job Magnet posts student résumés and provides lists of internships, full-time opportunities and career search engines, as well as Web sites to assist current students and alumni with their job searches. Students and alumni may obtain printed listings of job opportunities at the office of career services.
Internships Internships are available to undergraduate and graduate students in a wide variety of programs. Internships are strongly recommended as an important part of career development and networking. Students may register with the office of career services to take advantage of the department’s professional contacts with employers.
Interviews and Employer Visits SCAD attracts major art and design corporate recruiters to review portfolios and interview students and alumni. Employer visits are publicized through college media outlets. Students and alumni should contact the office of career services for information about employer visits and interviews.
