SCAD announces new appointments, promotions

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design announces several new appointments and promotions for Spring 2008. SCAD exists to prepare talented students for professional careers, emphasizing learning through individual attention in a positively oriented university environment.


Admission

Scott Linzey Scott Linzey joins SCAD from Stamats Higher Education Marketing, where he was a principal consultant. In his role as vice president for enrollment management, he will report to the senior vice president for admission and communications and oversee the recruitment and admission departments. Linzey will be responsible for recruitment and enrollment of highly qualified applicants for all SCAD campuses, including SCAD-eLearning. Linzey has 17 years of professional experience in admission at colleges such as Mount Saint Mary's University and Villa Julie College, plus higher education marketing and communications consulting. He earned an M.B.A. degree with a concentration in marketing and a B.A. degree in political science from Mount Saint Mary's University.


School of Fine Arts

Steven Bliss Steven Bliss has been appointed the dean of the School of Fine Arts. Bliss joined SCAD in 1992, first serving in the college's photography department as a professor and then as chair of the department before eventually becoming the dean of the School of Communication Arts. He has worked with students for nearly 30 years, serving at Ohio University, The Kansas City Art Institute, Hartwick College, The State University of New York at Purchase, Western Connecticut State University and The Maine Photographic Workshops. He also has exhibited his photography internationally, with more than 40 group and solo shows from New York to Australia. Bliss earned an M.F.A. degree in photography from Ohio University and a B.A. degree in studio art from the University of New Hampshire.


School of Foundation Studies

Maureen Garvin Maureen Garvin is the dean of the newly formed School of Foundation Studies. Garvin has served as both a professor and chair of the college's foundations department, which prepares students for SCAD degree programs through a rigorous curriculum of foundational art instruction. Garvin has taught foundation art courses for nearly 30 years, including positions at Trenton State College, Pennsylvania State University, Moore College of Art and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. She earned an M.F.A. degree in painting from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and a B.F.A. in painting and illustration from Massachusetts College of Art.


School of Film and Digital Media
Josephine Leong
Josephine Leong
has been promoted to assistant dean of the School of Film and Digital Media. Leong joined SCAD as a computer art professor in 2001. In 2003, she was appointed the chair of the newly formed interactive design and game development program and has helped grow the department from 60 students to almost 300 students. Leong also pioneered the Game Developer's eXchange (GDX) conference at SCAD, which has become an annual college event. She earned an M.S. degree from the University of Essex, and her areas of expertise include computer programming, systems design, computer networking, artificial intelligence, smart-card applications, electronic publishing, Internet and multimedia technologies, and interactive entertainment. Her current areas of interest include social networks, the semantic Web and technology trends.

Brenda Brathwaite Brenda Brathwaite has been promoted to the position of chair of the interactive design and game development department. A 26-year veteran of the video game industry, Brathwaite is an award-winning game designer and has worked on 22 internationally known titles, including ones in the Def Jam, Dungeons & Dragons and Wizardry series. Brathwaite is on the board of the International Game Developers Association, and she is the chair of the IGDA's Education SIG Ad hoc Committee and the co-founder and chair of the IGDA's Savannah chapter. She was named one of the 100 most influential women in the game industry by Next Generation magazine, and Nerve magazine called her one of the "50 artists, actors, authors, activists and icons who are making the world a more stimulating place." She is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and most recently was invited to participate in the exclusive Game Design Challenge at the Game Developers Conference, where she defeated the maker of Tetris. Brathwaite earned a B.S. degree from Clarkson University.


SCAD Libraries

Deborah Prosser Deborah Prosser, Ph.D., head librarian at SCAD-Atlanta, will serve as interim dean for library services. Prosser joined the college in 2006 from the Forsyth County Public Library in Cumming, Ga., where she was an information services supervisor. Prosser’s experience also includes her roles as an information specialist and assistant branch manager of the Gwinnett County Public Library and assistant director of education at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. She has served as an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania and as an assistant professor at the State University of New York College at Oneonta. Prosser earned Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.L.S. degree from Southern Connecticut State University, and a B.A. from the University of Delaware.
