SCAD-Atlanta to hold commencement ceremony May 31: Address to be delivered by Andre Leon Talley

ATLANTA ♠ Approximately 185 graduates will participate in the second annual Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta commencement ceremony Saturday, May 31, 6 p.m., at the Georgia World Congress Center's Sidney Marcus Auditorium, Building A, 285 Andrew Young International Blvd. N.W. Tickets are required for the ceremony.

André Leon Talley, Vogue editor-at-large, will address the SCAD 2008 graduating class at commencement ceremonies in Savannah and Atlanta. SCAD will present Talley with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree at the Savannah ceremony, which will be held at 9 a.m.

SCAD will recognize the following students as the 2008 Excelsus Laureate and Presidential Medal Honorees:


Excelsus Laureate: Rebecca Stern, Photography

SCAD, Atlanta, Commencement 2008 , excelsus laureate, Rebecca Stern, photography Prior to entering SCAD, Rebecca Stern earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, in 2003, with a history major, photography minor and pre-med concentration. She also served as editor-in-chief of the Colby yearbook and worked as an emergency medical technician after receiving her certification in 2001.

Stern, originally from Westport, Conn., entered SCAD in 2005 to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography. Her work has been featured in juried exhibitions throughout the United States, including at the Bridge Art Fair in Miami, the Rayko Center for Photography in San Francisco and the Housatonic Museum of Art in Connecticut. In November 2007, she curated and organized a juried exhibition at Art House in Atlanta, and her SCAD M.F.A. thesis exhibition, "GreenScapes," appeared at Blue Tower Gallery in Atlanta in May.

At SCAD-Atlanta, Stern has served as vice president of PhotoAwesome, a club that functions as a conduit between students and the Atlanta arts community. After graduation, she plans to move to Jackson Hole, Wyo.


Presidential Medal Honoree: Douglas Dabbs, Sequential Art

SCAD, Atlanta, Commencement 2008 , Presidential Medal Honoree, Douglas Dabbs, sequential art Douglas Dabbs has served as a drawing assistant for the SCAD Art of Life events, as well as a student representative for the Board of Visitors luncheon and for visitors from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

As a SCAD-Atlanta student, he worked as an intern with Gaijin Studios and comic book publisher Desperado. These internships helped him land a position as art assistant to Brian Stelfreeze and comic publisher Oni Press.

Dabbs, who hails from Nashville, Tenn., is graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sequential art and also is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts from SCAD in the same discipline. He has created illustrations for White Wolf Publishing and the children’s book “Not Quite Super.” His original story “Ally” is slated to appear in the comic “Negative Burn.” He is illustrating the “Resurrection” annual for Oni Press and soon will begin work on the graphic novel “Holliday.” 


Presidential Medal Honoree: Nadia Christie, Graphic Design

SCAD, Atlanta, Commencement 2008, Presidential Medal Honoree, Nadia Christie, graphic design Prior to attending SCAD, Nadia Christie earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Emory University's Roberto C. Goizueta Business School in 2002, with concentrations in business communication and organization and management.

In addition to her studies, she has been involved with service organizations and community programs including American Red Cross West Palm Beach and Atlanta, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Hands on Atlanta Discovery Program, Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry and the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity-New Orleans, Project Open Hand and the Everybody Wins mentoring program.

Christie, who was born in West Palm Beach, Fla., but has lived in Atlanta for the past decade, is an appointed executive board member of the Decatur alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She is immediate past president of the Caucus of Emory Black Alumni National Executive Board. A member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Christie has been active in the organization’s SCAD-Atlanta chapter and is graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design.
