SCAD celebrates 30 years of the finest arts education in the world
Year-long celebration to begin with Founders' Day Oct. 17
 SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Savannah College of Art and Design will commence celebrating 30 years of the finest arts education in the world with Founders' Day on Friday, Oct. 17, 4 p.m. at Arnold Hall, 1810 Bull St. The event is free and open to the public.
During the ceremony, SCAD will honor founder and CEO of Cora Bett Thomas Realty and SCAD-Savannah Board of Visitors member Cora Bett Thomas with the Charlie and Marie Pepe Award. The event also will feature reflections of the past 30 years and a performance by the Honeybees. Tours of SCAD's newest facility Arnold Hall also will be available, and guests will be able to taste SCAD's 30th anniversary honey and almond ice cream especially made by Leopold's Ice Cream.
Home to SCAD's liberal arts, art history and architectural history programs, Arnold Hall was originally the first Chatham County public high school named for Richard Arnold, five-time Savannah mayor and an architect of the Georgia public school system. Containing approximately 80,000 square feet of space, including a gallery and a technologically-advanced, 607-seat auditorium for lectures and presentations, Arnold Hall was renovated using LEED and historic preservation guidelines.
SCAD was founded in 1978 by Paula S. Wallace, Richard Rowan, May L. Poetter and Paul E. Poetter to provide college degree programs not previously available in Southeast Georgia and to create a specialized professional art college to attract students from throughout the United States and abroad. SCAD was legally incorporated in the state of Georgia Sept. 29, 1978.
In Spring 1979, SCAD purchased and renovated the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory to serve as the first classroom and administration building. SCAD opened its doors Fall 1979 with five trustees, four staff members, seven faculty members, 71 students and eight major programs.
SCAD is now the nation's most comprehensive art and design university, offering more degree programs and specializations than any art and design college in the United States. The college has more than 9,000 students enrolled at SCAD-Savannah, SCAD-Atlanta, SCAD-Lacoste and online through SCAD-eLearning.
