Webcomics masters Scott Kurtz and Dave Kellett offer free advice at SCAD
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Have you ever wondered if you could make a living by publishing your own comic strips on the Web? If so, join Scott Kurtz and Dave Kellett, authors of "How to Make Webcomics," who will offer free advice on the art and business of Webcomics, Tuesday, Oct. 14, 8 p.m., at the Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St. After the talk, the artists will sign and sketch in copies of their book. This event is free and open to the public.
Kellett is creator of the Webcomic "Sheldon," which features a 10-year-old software billionaire, his dim-witted grandfather and his talking duck, Arthur. After earning two master's degrees in the art and history of cartooning, Kellett worked as a writer and toy designer at Mattel. Scott Kurtz is creator of "PVP: Player vs. Player," a Webcomic that became an animated series and is one of the most successful Webcomics in the world. The popular story chronicles the adventures of a fictional video game magazine company and its employees.
In the age of online self-publishing, it is no longer necessary for comic artists to channel their work through syndicates or publishers. Kurtz and Kellett show how to make a living by self-publishing comic strips on the Web. "It is hard, but it's ultimately one of the most rewarding ways to make a living. You're in direct control of your artwork, speaking directly to your audience. For self-motivated people, it's a wonderful life," said Kellett.
