Computer Literacy Students who enroll in SCAD-eLearning courses must possess basic computer skills and have regular access to appropriate computer hardware, software and Internet connectivity in order to participate fully in coursework.
Online Orientation All new SCAD-eLearning students enroll in an online orientation course, which is presented in the same format as a typical SCAD-eLearning course. In this way, eLearning students can become familiar with the layout and navigation of their classes. An extensive range of resources and issues are covered in the orientation, including a quick-reference list for contacting key college personnel, responses to frequently asked questions, and information about college services and college policies.
Software Requirements Software needs vary according to individual courses or within the certificate and degree programs. See programs of study listings for information about specific software requirements. Unless the course description specifically states that software instruction is provided, students are expected to possess a working knowledge of all required software.
Ordering Software Students may order software through
Ex Libris, the college bookstore operated by Follett or, upon acceptance and matriculation, students may log in to
MySCAD for special software and hardware deals. Although incoming SCAD-eLearners are registered by academic advising for their first class, they can also access Ex Libris during Web registration for software orders. Please allow adequate time for delivery.
Additional Hardware and Software Specific degree and certificate programs may include additional hardware, software, operating system and browser requirements, as noted in the individual program descriptions in this guide. Technical requirements are subject to change.
Information Management and Technology The
information management and technology department is responsible for providing computer support to the Savannah College of Art and Design and for developing and implementing college management and information systems. IMT supports the mission of the college through developing and maintaining the computer network and user assistance. The vice president for information management and technology is responsible for overseeing all academic and administrative computing at SCAD.
Developments in information technology in recent years have led to fundamental changes in the ways that people communicate, learn and share information. SCAD is committed to using these innovations to provide students with new educational benefits and to introduce them to this expanding global community.
Help Desk The SCAD
Help Desk is the first point of contact for any technology assistance from the college. The Help Desk has extended hours to accommodate students located in different time zones and working outside of normal business hours. The Help Desk can assist with hardware- and software-related issues, as well as problems with MySCAD.
Virtual Library SCAD’s
virtual library offers access to numerous electronic databases and print materials to support the college’s curriculum. Jen Library’s online services include full-text resources, e-books, queries to the library reference staff, and interlibrary loan services. Upon request, Jen Library staff may send materials to students who are not located on a SCAD campus via priority mail at no charge. In addition, the
Visual Resources Center, available on the “college resources” channel on MySCAD, provides students access to more than 600,000 digital images.
Textbooks An online bookstore is available for ordering supplies, textbooks and software via MySCAD. E-Learning students may purchase textbooks from
Ex Libris, the college bookstore. Browse for textbook lists by class.
