As communities everywhere come to realize the irreplaceable nature and the cultural and financial value of their architectural structures, historic preservationists work to retrieve and recycle the built environment.
Students in professions as diverse as education, law and city planning may benefit from coursework in historic preservation. Educators may expand their knowledge base, re-certify or advance their careers with additional graduate work. Attorneys, architects and real estate professionals whose practices deal with design reviews and preservation planning issues can increase their understanding of the policies and processes of historic preservation.
The SCAD-eLearning graduate certificate in historic preservation program is designed for individuals working in historic preservation or related fields and those with an interest in historic preservation who would like to expand their knowledge or prepare to enter or enhance their careers. The SCAD-eLearning M.A. program includes courses in building assessment and preservation planning, and requires a final project.
SCAD-eLearning's Historic Preservation Program Earns Award SCAD was awarded the silver medal in the Best Practices in Distance Learning Programming category from the U.S. Distance Learning Association, after submitting its eLearning historic preservation degree program.

| § | | The Building Assessment Strategies and Preservation Rehabilitation courses each consist of two components. The first component includes a review of assessment and rehabilitation principles, which is completed in an online format. The second component is the preparation of building assessments and rehabilitation plans, which is completed in 30 hours of fieldwork required for each course. Students who wish to do their fieldwork in the Savannah area must apply for and, upon approval, commit to a residency of two weeks, working under the supervision of historic preservation faculty. Students must inform the department of the desired location of their fieldwork three months prior to beginning fieldwork; fieldwork locations are subject to the approval of faculty. |
