For a variety of outlets, from book publishing to advertising and from product packaging to the Internet, illustrators use their skills to capture viewers’ interest, translating concepts into tangible images.
SCAD-eLearning students create a substantial body of work, producing comprehensive portfolios in preparation for a career in freelance illustration. They are introduced to the practical side of the illustration business, from portfolio presentation to marketing and invoicing. Coursework parallels professional practice and sometimes involves actual clients.

Students are expected to use file transfer and compression utilities, and are encouraged to have a CD-R/DVD-R drive. Students should also be prepared to use a range of traditional illustration media and materials, which will be detailed in the syllabus.
In addition to the
general technical requirementsfor SCAD-eLearning, students enrolled in online illustration design programs are required to purchase or secure regular access to the following applications and/or peripherals as specified in each course:
