Painting, while one of the most traditional of the fine arts, today encompasses a variety of media. Professional painters may work as independent studio artists or in a wide range of professional fields, from museum curation to multimedia and film.
Painting students in the SCAD-eLearning Master of Arts degree program develop their work through informed, individual instruction and a curriculum that promotes exploration based on practical knowledge and awareness of historical and contemporary factors.

The painting faculty and student body come from a myriad of international backgrounds. Contemporary and traditional methods of image making, performance and installation work are accepted in the department. Course offerings range from mixed media, minimal art, conceptual art and narrative painting to landscape, portrait and still life painting.

The M.A. in painting is offered in residence in Atlanta and Savannah and also is offered with a limited residency requirement, providing an online option for obtaining the degree. Students begin in residence in Savannah or Atlanta, take courses online fall through spring, then finish in residence in Atlanta or Savannah. This is a cohort based program requiring a summer start. Course numbers and titles are subject to change.
